Acne is a skin disorder that is known to negatively affect the physical and psychosocial aspects. Here at OC MedDerm we believe that the best way to treat acne is to understand the cause of what is causing it in the first place. We start off by interviewing our patient, asking them about their lifestyle and what interventions have been tried. We also take age into consideration. Acne usually starts during puberty, however there are some cases where acne begins during adolescents. We tend to see acne begin to clear at the 3rd decade of life, however there may be exceptions to this rule. At this office, we will carefully evaluate where the acne is. We tend to see hormonal acne along the jawline and chin and may take into consideration a hormonal intervention such as birth control or spironolactone. Spironolactone reduces the androgen and testosterone in women making it effective to treat hormonal acne. Acne may also be caused from contact with surfaces that are oily and contaminated such as a phone or hat. In this case, we will offer treatments to control clogged pores and inflammation such as prescribing a strong antibiotic topical or retinoid agent. Diet may also play a role in acne, decreasing intake of milk and sugar is shown to reduce acne breakouts. At OC MedDerm we thoroughly analyze several aspects of our patients lives to create the best treatment possible for your skin goals. Is it Acne or Rosacea? We know the difference here at OC MedDerm.
